The Millennium Falcon Might Not Be As New As We Thought In Solo: A Star Wars Story

There are few spaceships from pop culture that have become more well-known and beloved than the Millennium Falcon. Han Solo's prized ship has flown from one side of the galaxy to the other, and it has seen all sorts of action. That said, we will see an entirely new side of the ship in the hands of Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Falcon looks totally new in Solo, but according to Lucasfilm Story Group guru Pablo Hidalgo, that is meant to reflect Lando's personality. Addressing the brief Millennium Falcon cameo from Revenge of the Sith, Hidalgo took to social media and said:

Turns out the fact that the Millennium Falcon looks so new and pristine in Solo: A Star Wars Story is not necessarily a reflection of its actual age. During the events of the upcoming prequel film, the ship will be in the possession of Lando Calrissian, who is a far more image-conscious smuggler than Han Solo. Lando has customized the ship to his liking, and part of that seems to include a tidy and neat appearance. Then, once the ship falls into Han's hands, the vessel will likely fall into disrepair and become the ship seen during the events of the original trilogy.

This tweet from Pablo Hidalgo comes in response to a fan question about the continuity of the Star Wars franchise timeline, and how the Millennium Falcon fits into it. The Corellian freighter looks brand-new during the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story, but attentive fans already know that it appears in a brief shot in Revenge of the Sith during a scene on Coruscant -- which takes place when Han and Lando were children.

The key here is to note that we do not necessarily know the exact age of the Millennium Falcon, other than the fact that it is incredibly old. Its highly customizable nature allows it to embody the personality of whoever owns it at any given time, so its time in Lando's hands will merely make it look newer.

Audiences will get a chance to see Lando Calrissian's high-modified and customized version of the Millennium Falcon next month when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres in theaters on May 25. Beyond that, you can catch Han's older version of the ship when J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX debuts in theaters next year on December 20, 2019.
