Chrissy Teigen Saw Crazy Rich Asians With Luna And Had The Best Response
Crazy Rich Asians hasn't even been in theaters for two full weeks yet, but already the movie has made a hefty sum of money and a sequel has been announced. The movie has been a big deal for Asians living in the U.S., as it's the first domestic box office flick to sport an all-Asian cast since The Joy Luck Club came out decades ago. Suffice to say, it's a significant movie, and actress Chrissy Teigen was lucky enough to be able to experience with her young daughter Luna in the theaters. Chrissy Teigen is generally someone who is clear about her thoughts and is happy to share those thoughts online. In this case, it's all positive. The Lip Sync Battle host and her family went to see Crazy Rich Asians over the weekend and while she felt going in that it personally "checked all the boxes," she also wanted to share a special moment that happened near the end of the movie when her husband John Legend and her daughter Luna danced together. She also mentioned her daughter saw people that looked like her on the screen, a first for her daughter, which also was special for Teigen as a mother. Finally, she noted she had no idea the movie would end up being so important for her, too. Overall, the experience was notable enough that Teigen wanted to share her thoughts with her many followers.
Chrissy Teigen's Instagram thoughts echo sentiments from some of the cast members themselves. Actresses like Constance Wu and Akwafina have taken to social media to talk about why the little rom-com that could is actually a huge deal for Asian-Americans. Wu, who also stars in ABC's Fresh Off The Boat, revealed that before the movie she "never dreamed" she could even lead a Hollywood film. Now, there is already a sequel in the works. Director Jon M. Chu also told Vulture that he heard some comments about the rom-com plot being predictable in early screenings, but that a lot of Asian-Americans who viewed the movie retorted that having a traditional rom-com was still important, noting they'd never seen Asian actors and actresses in those types of roles before.
Over the weekend, Crazy Rich Asians made another $26 million at the box office, which is notable for a second weekend, when movies normally drop between 40% and 60%. Instead, the movie with its all-Asian cast was only down 6% this weekend from its first weekend at the box office. That's a huge win for the movie and for Warner Bros.' gamble to make the movie and put it into theaters in the first place. Initially, Netflix was reportedly bidding hard to nab the film, but those involved felt like it needed and deserved a theatrical release.

What can I really say about this movie that hasn’t been said by absolutely everyone who has seen it. I’ve been excited to see this since production was announced but I could have never imagined how wonderful it would be. I planned on seeing it, making a few jokes about how it checked all the boxes for me (CRAZY ?? RICH ?? ASIAN ??) but the feeling I got during the credits, watching John dance with my little black asian mashup baby bear luna tunes, was a feeling I haven’t had at the end of any other movies. Luna, aside from being blown away by the general movie-going experience (yep she’s 13 now, time flies) looked up at @constancewu’s mother and yelled “y?y!†(“Grandma†in thai) because she saw someone who looked like her y?y. Someone beautiful and aspirational. It was something that simple that made my heart just...warm. That made me happy. It made me happy to see this over the top story done from so many angles, some I could totally understand because of my own confusing Asian American upbringing. I loved it all, from the quieter moments of talking around the table of sacrifice and past hardships to the spectacle of the bachelor party. Finding that I could cry watching the most over the top aisle walk on the planet. You never know how much you miss being represented on screen until you actually see what it’s like to be represented. And represented by all different types of characters with all different types of personalities, just like any other great movie. Also aside from all that, it’s just colorful, fun and big as fuck. God I love a rom com. God I loved it all. Thank you guys for making this movie.
