Frank Grillo Gets Blunt About Avengers 4 Comments

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest franchises of film history, so the pressure is on to deliver a satisfying blockbuster with each new release. Part of this process is surprising the audience with plot twists, which the studio and its actors must keep under wraps. But plenty of actors have accidentally spoiled plot points before, and Captain America: Winter Soldier actor Frank Grillo recently revealed that he has a flashback role in Avengers 4.

But now it looks like Frank Grillo might have been pulling our leg. That, or he got in trouble by the folks at Marvel. Shortly after he claimed Crossbones had a small role in Avengers 4, Grillo posted on social media, and he didn't seem happy about the story going so viral. As he put it,

#fakenews. In the course of a day I get asked 1000 questions about a character I played for 8 minutes. I've confirmed nothing. But sometimes I have fun w people who ask. #moveon

Well, that seems a bit more cut and dry. Despite all but confirming his return for Avengers 4, it seems that Frank Grillo is now backtracking on the comments, and claiming he was simply messing with his interviewer-- and the fans. Now that's what I call a villain.

Frank Grillo's recent Instagram post is in stark juxtaposition to the picture he painted just days ago, which had the potential to spoil quite a few aspects of Avengers 4. Crossbones' inclusion would be a major shocker for the fandom, especially considering his fate in Captain America: Civil War. He seemingly perished in the opening sequence of that blockbuster-- and the fandom didn't expect to see him again.

As if Crossbones' possible role in Avengers 4 wasn't enough of a surprise, Frank Grillo also gave some context to the rumored scene, which has the potential to have grave affects on the contents of the untitled movie. Specifically, Grillo claimed he was part of a flashback. This could hint toward time travel being used as a macguffin in Avengers 4, something fans have been expecting for quite some time.

The ending of Avengers: Infinity War saw Josh Brolin's Thanos succeed in his in collecting the Infinity Stone, and promptly wiping out half of the galaxy with the snap of a finger. It's currently unclear how the surviving heroes will continue to fight Thanos, and hopefully bring back the fallen characters in the process. But if time travel is on the table, as Frank Grillo had previously hinted, it might be the key to stopping the Mad Titan once and for all.

All will be revealed when Avengers 4 arrives in theaters on May 3rd, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

Originally, Shazams Costume Was Going To Be Different

Whenever we are set to see a superhero on the big screen for the first time, there is always a great deal of weight put how the costume looks. How well does it translate from the comics? Is it a faithful adaptation? Does it look cool? These are all a big part of how quickly audiences may or may not take to a character. One of the heroes making his big screen debut soon is Shazam, and his costume has been the subject of much speculation and hullabaloo. We finally got to see the costume a couple weeks back in a surprising way, but it turns out that what we saw wasn't the costume's original design. Shazam! director David F. Sandberg explained how the costume evolved, saying:

Yeah, there were a few iterations. And you sort of have to keep changing stuff even after we started shooting because you realize things... You shoot the first scene and Zach is like, 'You know, I can't move my hands properly with these gauntlets.' So we had to redesign that, or like the boots kept falling apart so it's like, 'Oh well, I guess we have to do something different there.' It was sort of a constant process of updating and making it work better.

This makes sense, and I can't imagine the majority of superhero costumes we see onscreen are identical to the original designs. Not unlike a superhero testing out web shooters, goggles or fabrics, it is all about seeing what works best, and just because a costume looks great on paper, a computer screen or a hanger, that doesn't mean it is perfect for an actor to wear. It sounds like the original Shazam gauntlets hindered Zachary Levi's maneuverability, and we certainly don't want a magical hero onscreen whose boots are falling apart. These are things that you find out as part of the process and sometimes during filming. Functionality is a key thing, and as David F. Sandberg told The Film Riot Podcast, that involves a lot of trial and error. Finding the right balance of making everything work while still looking cool and staying true to the character is the challenge with designing a superhero costume.

Who knows if we'll ever see the original Shazam costume, but perhaps it will show up in an art book or on some behind-the-scenes or making-of video for the film. We've only had a limited glimpse so far, but the final Shazam costume looks to have hit the mark with bright colors, a glowing lightning bolt and that textured fabric that all the superhero costumes seem to have (just plain spandex isn't very cinematic).

Of course, as with any of these things, leaked set photos and even official marketing aren't a true test of the success of a big screen superhero costume. Ultimately we need to see how the costume looks in action to judge how good it is. Shazam! has recently wrapped filming, so hopefully a tease or a sizzle reel where we'll finally be able to see some of this movie isn't far off. At San Diego Comic-Con perhaps?

Lin-Manuel Miranda Is Finally Making His Directing Debut, And Yes, It's A Musical

Following the success of Hamilton on Broadway, Lin-Manuel Miranda has found himself in demand in every conceivable corner of entertainment. Now, he's moving behind the camera. Lin-Manuela Miranda has agreed to direct his first feature film. Unsurprisingly, he's chosen a musical as his first foray into film directing. Tick, Tick...Boom is the autobiographical musical about the life of playwright Jonathan Larson, best known for creating the Broadway hit Rent. Miranda will direct and produce the film alongside Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.

Tick, Tick...Boom is set in 1990 and it follows Jonathan Larson as he waits tables and works on his new play Superbia. He's waiting for his big break, but as it doesn't seem to be coming, and his friend and roommate is in the process of giving up on his own dream, he begins to wonder if it's all worth it. In 2014 Lin-Manuela Miranda actually played the lead role in Tick, Tick...Boom and, according to Deadline, he credits the play with helping him find his own voice as a playwright. With a personal connection to the material like that, Miranda seems like the perfect choice to direct the film adaptation.

Not to spoil the ending, but Jonathan Larson did end up writing a massive Broadway hit, Rent, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1996. Unfortunately, Larson never saw the play's success, as he passed away just before the show's first preview performances.

The new directing gig is just one of many projects that Lin-Manuel Miranda currently has going. He'll be seen in front of the camera later this year when he stars alongside Emily Blunt in Disney's Mary Poppins Returns. He's also producing a new film and television series based on Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicles. In addition, Miranda's play Into the Heights is currently being adapted itself into a feature film. He's also about to return to play the lead in Hamilton for a special engagement of the musical in Puerto Rico that will help raise money for Hurricane Maria relief. He's busy, is what I'm saying.

While directing a movie musical isn't going to be exactly like creating one for the stage, one assumes that Lin-Manuel Miranda's talent for the latter will be of great service to the former. There's no denying the man is an insane talent and at this point, it's probably best that we all just assume he can do anything until such time as he proves otherwise.

Tick, Tick...Boom is in the very early stages right now, Dear Evan Hanson writer Steven Levenson is currently working on the screenplay, so it will be a while before Lin-Manuel Miranda goes behind the camera, but musicals have been doing well recently, so perhaps Miranda will help create another massive hit very soon.
