Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Burned Cat Litter To Mimic Lava On Set

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a movie full of numerous complex practical and digital effects. However, the film came up with a pretty simple way to create a stand-in for lava when it was needed on set. While all of the lava that the audience sees in FallenKingdom is a digital creation, director J.A. Bayona needed something to play the part of the lava on set that the actors could react to. The solution, set cat litter on fire, of course. According to visual effects supervisor David Vickery...

We had this crack in the ceiling filled with cat litter that had been soaked in some sort of flammable liquid. There were 12 different nozzles that could drop this cat litter at different points, and that gave us these huge beautiful streams of liquid fire that dropped down from the ceiling. It also gave us this wonderful interactive lighting and a really interesting billowing smoky atmosphere.

It makes perfect sense why Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom would need to come up with something to stand in for the lava while the actors are on set. During an early scene in the film that sees the character of Claire and Franklin cornered by a dinosaur in old, overgrown, portion of the old theme park, lava is flowing everywhere around them as the volcano begins to erupt and slowly (at first) destroy the island. The actors need to know where the digital lava is going to be placed when it's created in post-production so they don't accidentally stand in the exact wrong spot that has it pouring on their heads.

What's a little less clear is why or how somebody got the idea that the thing they needed to play the part of lava was flaming kitty litter. That's not explained to Thrillist. It's not exactly the first thing that comes to mind. Kitty litter does pour fairly smoothly, which may be part of the reason. You should get the constant stream you need with little or no gaps in the flow. Of course, you also need something that will generate light, which means that simply using cat litter won't do, you also need to set it on fire.

On the plus side, since one has to assume that burning cat litter pouring down around you is a fairly unpleasant and mildly scary idea, director J.A. Bayona almost certainly got some very realistic performances from Justice Smith and Bryce Dallas Howard. Getting burning by flaming cat litter probably hurts a lot less than lava, but that doesn't exactly mean it's fun.

It's not clear if using kitty litter in place of fire has been a regular occurrence, but now I have to wonder if this is a special effects move that has been used before. How much kitty litter does the average film production actually go through?

How Avengers: Infinity War's VFX Teams Kept Things Secret

One of the biggest challenges faced today by blockbuster films and hit television shows is maintaining secrecy. The more popular and anticipated something is, the greater the speculation and the more valuable nuggets of information and potential spoilers become. For Avengers: Infinity War, a movie that is the biggest milestone yet of a decade of universe-building in one of cinema's biggest franchise, that task is doubly difficult. A film of this size, with so many people working on it at all levels, requires a strategy to maintain secrecy. According to the film's VFX supervisor, Dan DeLeeuw, that meant divvying up the work and letting very few people know the whole story, as he explained:

It's an interesting process. It's something that... I was fortunate enough because of Thanos kind of running through the entire movie, a handful knew everything that was going to happen and I was fortunate to be one of them, which helped while designing everything and designing the shots. For the secrecy component of it, when we would work with the different special effects vendors, basically we would try to like, when we would award the work, it was something where we'd do it based on sequences. So each vendor would know what happens in their sequences, but not necessarily what would happen in someone else's sequence.

This sounds like a smart approach, and given the fact that Infinity War's biggest spoilers didn't leak before the movie released, I would say an effective one too. As VFX supervisor and one of the very lucky few people who knew the whole story, Dan DeLeeuw was able to make sure that the different VFX studios working on the film would each be doing something different. So in this fashion, lots of people had different parts of the story, but a limited number of people had the whole thing. Like giving sections of a puzzle to different groups with none of them knowing what the entire picture looks like until it all comes together. Or everyone got an Infinity Stone, but nobody could enjoy the full power of the gauntlet, if you prefer.

This strategy limited who knew what and how much, thereby reducing the amount of secrets that could theoretically get out from a single source. As far as how the visual effects jobs were actually broken up, Dan DeLeeuw also explained to ScreenRant:

For example, Framestore, they knew what would happen in the Battle of New York with Spidey and Ruffalo and Iron Man and Maw and Cull Obsidian, but they didn't really know what happens outside of that because it's on a need to know basis, I guess. But then a company like Digital Domain, they had done Vormir so they definitely knew what was happening with Gamora on Vormir, and they then did the bit with Thor at the end. It was all compartmentalized to who knew what and who had access to those shots. Not any visual effects vendor had the entire movie.

It is kind of cool how one VFX vendor would know one group or character's arc for part of the film without knowing the rest. On the one hand, that's way more information than the public knows, but it's still very compartmentalized, as Dan DeLeeuw said. Marvel seems to have taken a similar approach with the actors and the scripts, not letting anyone know anything until they absolutely needed to.

What's neat about this approach is that it kind of parallels the fan experience. Prior to Avengers: Infinity War, all we had to go on was the trailers and out of order puzzle pieces that we weren't sure how they all fit together, and we had to draw conclusions from that information. There were also major pieces missing from the marketing, notably the stuff on Vormir that Digital Domain worked on. For the many VFX artists who worked on the film, they knew certain pieces of the film very well and had more to go on than fans, but still didn't know everything.

Warner Bros And Legendary Are Teaming Up Again, But There's A New Catch

For eight years, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures had a studio partnership that produced huge hits for the studios, including Inception, 300 and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. That partnership came to an end in 2013 and Legendary went on to join forces with Universal Studios. Now it is looking like the distribution and co-financing deal between Legendary and Universal is coming to an end, and Legendary will be reuniting with Warner Bros. But this time, the terms of the deal will be a little different.

Under their previous deal, Legendary and Warner Bros. had a slate financing partnership wherein the two studios would co-finance big budget productions. In that manner, each studio was financially invested in the success of a film and each risked less of its own money. Standard distribution fees applied and the two studios would split the profits. According to Variety, the new deal, which is currently being negotiated, is a straight output deal. Under the new deal, for a fee, Legendary gets access to Warner Bros. distribution. Unlike before, neither studio will be obligated to invest in the other's films. That option will still be available, but it will no longer be required as it was for a specified number of films under the previous agreement.

The deal between Legendary and Universal ends at the end of this calendar year, but the writing has been on the wall that these two would be parting ways for a while now. A few weeks back, Legendary's Detective Pikachu switched from being a Universal Pictures release to being a Warner Bros. release, indicating that the two studios were ready to get back together. The alliance between Legendary and Universal didn't work out quite as well as Universal had hoped. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for example, which was pretty much a guaranteed hit, was co-financed, and thus Universal had to split the profits. On the other side of things, Legendary pictures like Skyscraper and Crimson Peak that Universal distributed turned out to be misses at the box office.

This new deal between Warner Bros. and Legendary would seemingly offer the kind of flexibility that the previous deal did not, while also avoiding some of the things that soured the deal with Universal. Legendary gets to take advantage of Warner Bros.' vast distribution network and the studios can choose whether or not to invest in each other's projects. In that way, neither is trapped into sharing profits on a sure thing or having to make risky investments in the other studio's film. Warner Bros. and Legendary delivered in a huge way in the past with some incredibly memorable and successful films. Hopefully this new deal can bear fruit that's just as sweet.

Warner Bros. and Legendary have maintained their MonsterVerse relationship even during the Universal deal, with Kong: Skull Island being distributed by Warner Bros. The next film from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. in the MonsterVerse is Godzilla: King of the Monsters, stomping into theaters on May 31, 2019.
