Wayne's World Came Back For The Oscars, And It Was Perfect
When Wayne's World used Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody as the ultimate headbanger, it revitalized the song's reputation and created one of the most iconic moments in comedy history. So with Bohemian Rhapsody deeply in the mix during this year's Academy Awards, it was the perfect time to bring Mike Myers' Wayne and Dana Carvey's Garth back together for one more ride. And as you'll see below, that's exactly what happened, as for one night only, Wayne's World returned to celebrate the music of Queen:
It certainly helps that Mike Myers was a co-star of the Academy Award winning film, in a scene where he specifically says that a moment like the one in Wayne's World would never happen with the film's titular song. But to bring back Dana Carvey and to have the two of them riff yet again as the legendary Wayne and Garth of Aurora, Illinois is a moment that every 90's kid has been dreaming of for some time.
A fitting moment of reciprocity for the cultural longevity of the famous Queen tune, this tribute to both Wayne's World and Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the highlights of the evening's proceedings. And of course, what Wayne's World reunion would be complete without Myers and Carvey proclaiming, on one of the biggest stages in the world, that they are not worthy to be in the presence of the surviving members of the band that brought them to the party.
It certainly was a fantastic night for Bohemian Rhapsody, with four wins out of the film's five nominations, and having Mike Myers and Dana Carvey introducing the film's respective clip highlighting the Best Picture-nominated film was just the cherry on top for all involved. It's a cyclical game of congratulations really: without Wayne's World, Bohemian Rhapsody may have never happened. Likewise, without the song Bohemian Rhapsody making that moment in Wayne's World all the more memorable, that film may not have made its own crater of nostalgic remembrance on the world when it did.
While Bohemian Rhapsody didn't ultimately take the Best Picture award, it certainly was one of the a huge winners of the night. And, in their own way, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are winners, as they got to bring back their most iconic Saturday Night Live characters in the service of Queen during the Academy Awards. If it gets any better than that, feel free to correct us in the comments below.
