Could Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Holdo Return? Here's What Laura Dern Said
Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi features several stellar death scenes, but few are quite as jaw-dropping as the Holdo Maneuver. Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) goes out in a blaze of glory, leaving many fans to wonder what the future could hold for the legacy of the one-off character. In fact, Laura Dern even seems interested in learning where more about Holdo's story, opening up in a recent interview and admitting that she's intrigued by possibilities to continue exploring Holdo's fate. Dern addressed the possibility of Holdo using an escape pod just before her Holdo Maneuver and said:
This is the message to send to the world: I am absolutely comfortable with that theory. I'm thrilled to be a hero but I remember a long time ago, someone saying, 'No one dies in space'.
So, if the fans prove powerful enough to will Amilyn Holdo's survival into existence, then it sounds like Laura Dern will be more than willing to accept that theory and help make it a reality. As it currently stands, there's no definitive evidence to disprove the possibility that Holdo didn't somehow manage to make it off of her cruiser before turning it into a light speed missile. If someone decides to retcon her death, then she will come back to continue playing the character.
Of course, those decisions will take place far, far away from Laura Dern before they end up happening; all she can do is hope that her idea moves forward. The Big Little Lies actress continued her interview with Evening Standard and explained she'd be happy to learn more about Holdo's past, as well, noting,
I'm eager to learn about the future -- or the past -- of this character only because I loved playing her so much it would be heartbreaking not to have an experience of playing her again. Whether or not there's an escape pod --- unfortunately I'm not the one that knows!
That comment raises a definite possibility about how the character could continue even if she did indeed die in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Star Wars timeline is one of the most complicated in the realm of pop culture, and there is plenty of room to continue exploring the life of Holdo's earlier years as a politician and military leader. Like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the franchise could return to a previous era in the Star Wars franchise, which would allow Holdo to come back and play a more prominent role.
Regardless of whether or not there's a future for Amilyn Holdo in the Star Wars universe, there's still plenty of room for our current heroes to keep moving forward. The franchise will continue with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story later this year on May 25, and the current trilogy will continue when Star Wars: Episode IX debuts on December 20, 2019.
