Star Wars: Episode IX Looks Like Its Bringing Back A J.J. Abrams Regular

A lot of filmmakers use a lot of the same actors when making movies. Whether they just like working together or get comfortable with the familiarity, you can often be confident that you'll see Samuel L. Jackson in a Quentin Tarantino movie or that Steven Spielberg will cast Tom Hanks in something. It seems that another director/actor pairing will be returning to the screen together as J.J. Abrams mainstay Greg Grunberg has all but confirmed that he'll be returning to play the role of Snap Wexley in Star Wars: Episode IX. While not mentioning the movie by name, when asked about it recently at San Diego Comic-Con the actor confirmed that he was growing a beard for some reason. According to Grunberg...

You know what --- we'd better or else my wife is going to kill me for growing a beard. I can't officially say anything, but this is getting itchy, and I'm getting itchy to go over there and do it.

Greg Grunberg has been one of J.J. Abrams constant companions on screen. He had significant roles on both Felicity and Alias on television and has also appeared in small roles in Abrams' film projects in everything from Mission: Impossible III to the Star Trek reboot.

He also appeared in the previous Star Wars movie that J.J. Abrams directed, The Force Awakens in the role of "Snap" Wexley a Resistance pilot who flew alongside Poe Dameron in the attack on Starkiller Base.

Based on Greg Grunberg's comments (via Yahoo) it seems that not only will the actor be back, he'll be back in the same role he played previously, as opposed to voicing a CGI alien or something of that sort.

Grunberg isn't the only frequent Abrams collaborator to reportedly be in the film as the word is Keri Russell is also on board the final Star Wars episode in an undisclosed role.

This piece of information is actually quite interesting because "Snap" Wexley never appears in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and considering that the Resistance is now small enough that the entirety of it can fit inside the Millennium Falcon, it's unlikely he got lost in the crowd. He certainly wasn't one of the pilots flying the speeder's on Crait at the end of the film, and considering how few pilots were left, they certainly could have used him. We would have written off "Snap" as one of the many Resistance members who died over the course of the last episode, but it seems that's not the case. Will Grunberg's character appear in Star Wars: Episode IX as if he was part of the surviving Resistance that we just never saw? If not, and he was actually elsewhere, how did he get away and why didn't he respond to Leia's distress call?

Into The Spider-Verses Oscars Acceptance Speech Got Cut Off Before They Could Thank Stan Lee

When somebody wins an Academy Award it is customary to thank all of the people who aided and supported you in doing the thing that got you the award. Frequently, if there are multiple people winning the award, or just a lot of people to thank, there's just never enough time in the limited time given to thank everybody. The directors and producers of Best Animated Feature winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse got cut off giving their speech on Sunday, and it turns out two very important people got left out who one of the directors was going to thank, Spider-Man creaters Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

Producer Christopher Miller tweeted out the final piece of the acceptance speech.

There were a lot of people who had something to say when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the Oscar on Sunday. Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller spoke first before handing the microphone over to the directors. Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman got to speak, but when the mic was turned over to Bob Persichetti, it had already been cut off and music had already started playing, meaning he never got to say a word.

It's certainly frustrating whenever any winner gets "played off" at an awards show. While it's understandable from a broadcast standpoint that you don't want the show to go on forever, seeing people win the awards and give their speeches is literally the point of the event in the first place. If the show runs over because people got to give more of their speech, that seems like a perfectly reasonable trade.

If anybody was a little upset that the creators of Spider-Man were not thanked for help in the success of a movie about Spider-Man, it seems the plan had been to end with that, but the people in charge of the pace of the Oscars had other plans.

We lost both of the great comic creators Steve Ditko and Stan Lee in 2018. Steve Ditko passed away in June and Stan Lee followed in November. Lee had lent his voice to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as part of his regular cameos in nearly all Marvel theatrical projects, but he died before the movie hit theaters.

Sunday's win for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was actually one of the more closely watched races at the ceremony. Into the Spider-Verse had been a massive hit with fans and critics alike, many believing the film was worthy of a Best Picture nomination as well. At the same time, with the frequency with which Disney and Pixar tend to win the animated category, there was always the possibility that one of those films could have jumped in and played spoiler.

Luckily, that didn't happen and the film that was clearly the best animated movie of the year won the award, even if not all the directors got to speak.

James Wan Clarifies How Much Practical And Visual Effects Are Used In Aquaman

Digital effects have come a long way in recent years, and filmmakers can do quite a lot in post-production. That said, for many fans and industry insiders, there's still no complete substitute for old-fashioned practical effects. That debate is something that has popped up through the development of Aquaman, and it turns out that director James Wan is embracing the best of both worlds by augmenting practical makeup and costuming with some CGI wizardry. Explaining the process on social media, The Conjuring director wrote:

So, like many entries in the DCEU canon (and the superhero genre in general), Aquaman will feature heavy use of CGI to create the characters in the world. However, there's more than one way to skin a cat, and it seems that Wan and his team are not solely relying on computers to create the undersea realm of Atlantis. With that in mind, the film will also incorporate practical makeup effects to create the look and feel of the beings who inhabit that world, with computers creating room to enhance the makeup designs and environments.

James Wan's post about the blending of practical effects with computer-generated visual effects is only the latest in a series of updates that we have received about how the undersea landscape of Aquaman will come together when all is said and done. Much has already been said about the sheer amount of groundbreaking tech that the movie is using, but it looks like there's still an awareness that certain practical visual elements still work better than going purely digital.

All of this comes together to remind us that Aquaman is arguably unlike anything that we have seen from the DCEU before. Even though we got brief glimpses of Atlantis during the events of Justice League, everything that we have heard about Aquaman seems to suggest that the movie is going to give us a very alien world at the bottom of the ocean as Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry embarks on his first-ever solo adventure. Exact plot details remain under wraps, but with the promise of impressive effects, badass villains like Black Manta and Ocean Master, and Atlantean soldiers riding sharks, I think it's safe to say that we're incredibly excited to see what Aquaman has in store.

James Wan's Aquaman will premiere in theaters later this year on December 21, but if you are looking for a first-look at some of the blendings of practical and CGI effects, then make sure to keep an eye out for the first official Aquaman trailer this coming weekend when DC takes the stage at San Diego Comic-Con.
