How George Lucas Contributed To A Fun Solo: A Star Wars Story Scene

Even though George Lucas is no longer the driving creative force behind the world of Star Wars, that doesn't mean he's fully separated himself from the franchise that he sold to Disney in 2012 for over $4 billion. Lucas has popped by the sets of all the Star Wars movies made under the Mouse House banner, including the days-away Solo: A Star Wars Story. But while he was seeing how Solo was coming along, Lucas also suggested how one of the scenes could be altered. As director Ron Howard recalled, there's a romantically charged moment between Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo and Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra in Lando Calrissian's cape closet aboard the Millennium Falcon. Originally Han was going to hang up Qi'ra's cloak, but Lucas believed it was better to go in a different direction. Howard continued:

[Lucas] said, 'You know, Han wouldn't bother to hang it up.' And then he sort of did it. George became Han Solo for a second. The body language was there and the attitude. Not only was it a nice accent on the scene, but it was also a reminder that George created this character and really understood him. He was so reluctant [to offer his opinion], and yet the choice was so right that it was fun to use it.

Solo: A Star Wars Story was written By Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, the former of whom also co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, so needless to say that he was already quite familiar with writing Han Solo before this Star Wars spinoff. But it never hurts to have the person who created a character give their take on how a particular scene or moment should be handled, and as Ron Howard told Variety, he was reminded how deeply George Lucas understood Han. Obviously Han deciding not to hang up Qi'ra's cloak is small in the grand scheme of things, but it ended up being a minor improvement to what was originally written. While on the Solo set, Lucas also gave Howard (who replaced Phil Lord and Chris Miller) a simple, but key piece of advice for helming a Star Wars movie: "Just enjoy this."

Taking place approximately a decade before he met Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Mos Eisley Cantina, Solo: A Star Wars Story follows Han trying to make a name for himself in the galaxy far, far away's criminal underworld. Along with Alden Ehrenreich playing Han, the movie's main cast includes Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra, Woody Harrleson as Tobias Beckett, Thandie Newton as Val, Phoebe Waller-Bridge as L3-37 and Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos.

How Han Solo Gets His Name In Solo: A Star Wars Story

Spoiler alert for Solo: A Star War Story. If you haven't seen the blockbuster, look away!

It's been a rocky road, but Solo: A Star Wars Story has finally arrived in theaters. The second Star Wars standalone film helped to further bridge the gap between the prequels trilogy and A New Hope, filling in backstories for franchise heroes like Han, Lando Clarissian, and Chewbacca. Solo ultimately answered more questions than anyone was expecting it to, starting with how the title character got his name.

Solo opens three years before the main narrative of the movie. On his home planet of Corellia, a young Han and his lover Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) attempted to get smuggled out. When their plan goes awry and Qi'ra is captured, Han enlists in the Imperial Academy in order to avoid capture and eventually return for his girl, but there's just one issue: he doesn't have a last name. When the Imperial recruiter asks him who is people are, Han reveals he has no loved ones. Since he's all by himself, the Officer dubs him "Solo", and thus the legendary smuggler was born.

This moment, and the movie in general, really helps to fill in the gaps in Han Solo's timeline for the Star Wars franchise. While fans expected to see him meet Chewie and Lando for the first time, Solo was peppered with extra easter eggs and moments for the hardcore fandom. Han getting his name ends the movie's prologue, and the movie picks up years after the title character joined the Empire's Air Force.

Han being given his last name seems to be met with a mixed reaction from fans and cinephiles. Some moviegoers really enjoyed that moment of levity, and thought it helped set the tone for the rest of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Meanwhile, naysayers thought it was perhaps too cheesy, and fodder for memes in the future.

Prior to Solo: A Star Wars Story, fans probably assumed that Han Solo was the character's given name. Things like parents and backstories aren't super filled out in the Star Wars franchise, so writers Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan had the freedom to make liberal choices with the canon while crafting Solo's story. Plenty of other inside jokes and references were made for the hardcore fandom, including the emphasis on Han's dice, his signature blaster, and the mention of characters like Bossk. Plus there's that surprise ending cameo, which seems to really set up the idea of a potential sequel. We'll just have to wait and see.

Earlier this month, there was a bit of intrigue about what exactly Six Underground is. Ostensibly a big-budget Netflix action film from director Michael Bay and starring Ryan Reynolds, there was a rumor that it was actually a secret ThunderCats movie. That rumor turned out to be false (although someone should make a ThunderCats movie). Six Underground is not a ThunderCats movie. What Six Underground is, though, is a Michael Bay movie and Ryan Reynolds makes that perfectly clear in a new video where he speaks about what it's like to work with the blockbuster director. Take a look:

Ah yes, the quiet moments that are the hallmarks of Michael Bay's oeuvre, I know exactly what Ryan Reynolds is talking about, but can't quite put my finger on a specific example at the moment. Six Underground is a Michael Bay film alright, and what better way to illustrate that than with a car being launched into the air in gloriously chaotic and awesome fashion? If you aren't paying attention to the background noise on the set, you might not see it coming until the cars start passing by in the background awfully fast. Ryan Reynolds plays the satire perfectly in his Twitter post, and the drone doesn't even come into the shot until after the stunt. Once the action hits though, it becomes perfectly clear that this is definitely a Michael Bay movie. The only thing missing is an American flag.

You don't hire Michael Bay because you want quiet moments where you get lost in the character's eyes. You hire Michael Bay for explosive action and that's what we see here. This is the director's bread and butter, and Six Underground should give audiences exactly what they have come to expect from a Michael Bay movie (and frankly, what he does best), and that's ridiculous action on a grand scale.

The plot of Six Underground is still being kept under wraps, but when news of the project first broke, THR reported that sources said it was about six billionaires who fake their deaths and form a team to take down criminals. Ryan Reynolds has described it as an insane action film that takes place in exotic locales like Florence and Abu Dhabi. Now thanks to this video, we know that the film will probably feature a major car chase at some point.

Six Underground is directed by Michael Bay and written by Deadpool 2's Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The Netflix film stars Ryan Reynolds, Mlanie Laurent, Dave Franco, Adria Arjona, Ben Hardy and Corey Hawkins. There is no official date, but Six Underground is eyeing a summer 2019 release on Netflix.
