Dark Phoenix's Original Ending Was Changed For Being Too Similar To Civil War And Captain Marvel

After having its release date pushed back a few times, and having to reshoot the third act of the movie, Dark Phoenix finally arrived in theaters this weekend. The film had behind-the-scenes drama and a piece of the problem was in the film's original ending. The ending had to be reshot and it sounds like it was because it was too similar to two other Marvel releases, Captain America: Civil War and Captain Marvel.

The cast of Dark Phoenix has already shed some light on the film's original ending and that it had to be reshot because it was too similar to another superhero movie. Online detectives were quick to deduce that it had to be Captain Marvel, which also features a cosmically powered female lead learning to cope with massive powers. However, director Simon Kinberg has revealed that elements of Civil War were also in the equation.

My original ending didnt have the entire X-Family together the way they are in the film now. More than Captain Marvel, you could see a lot of Civil War in that ending. Usually, these big, huge action movies have the climactic moment in the third act. I loved the way that Civil War had its big action set piece where everyones facing off more towards the end of the second act rather than in the third so that after that huge battle, youre left with Winter Soldier, Captain America, and Iron Man.

As Simon Kinberg points out, the original ending of Dark Phoenix was going to be much more intimate and include only a small handful of characters. It also tore the X-Men apart over an ideological difference -- just like in Civil War with the Avengers.

That being said, the miscalculation here is that Civil War was built up over the course of several films with characters we knew and understood. Dark Phoenix is centered around Jean Grey, who was only in one other movie as a supporting character. We need to understand how these new X-Men relate to each other to have an ending as impactful as Civil War.

However, I don't think that could have been the reason the film was reshot. Civil War came out in May 2016 and Dark Phoenix didn't start filming until June 2017. Even if he did have a draft of the script complete when Civil War came out, Simon Kinberg had over a year for rewrites. On the other hand, maybe he didn't rewrite the ending, but it didn't score well with test audiences.

Additionally, this intimate ending was also similar to Captain Marvel, Simon Kinberg goes on to say in the same interview with io9.

Its this telescoped down view of their raw emotions, and I loved how intimate that was. Thats what I was going for with Dark Phoenixs ending even though it then might have looked like Captain Marvel for about two minutes.

Simon Kinberg elaborates that when Jean releases her powers in one scene, it was visually similar to Captain Marvel, so they had to tone it down in reshoots. He also points out that those reshoots took place long before the public had even seen Captain Marvel.

Sometimes it's all about who does it first. You can decide for yourself if Dark Phoenix made the right changes if you see the film. Critics have not been kind, but the X-Men film earned a slightly higher Audience Score and a B- CinemaScore from polled moviegoers. The blockbuster is out in theaters right now.

With Deadpool 2 now in theaters, the world of Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) has changed quite a bit. No longer a solo act, the red-clad mercenary has found a new family in the form of X-Force, and new friends in the form of Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz). However, as the credits of Deadpool 2 clearly show, Ryan Reynolds' Wade goes back in time to save Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) before any of that can happen. It's a huge moment for the film, and we think the decision to undo Vanessa's untimely death could be a massive mistake on Deadpool 2's part, and future films will need to do something drastic to earn that decision, particularly as it relates to her villainous persona from the comics.

Right off the bat, it needs to be said that Deadpool 2 is largely a comedy for the bulk of its runtime. The film is chock full of hilarious moments, and it thrives on offbeat humor. Having said that, the film also maintains a rich emotional core built upon the foundation of Vanessa's death at the beginning of the movie. It's no secret that the Deadpool movies like to have fun by sullying dramatic moments with jokes, but Deadpool 2 very clearly wants us to care about the emotional stakes of Vanessa's death. With Wade's decision to save her in Deadpool 2's post-credits scene by using Cable's time travel technology to kill her attacker, the film essentially undoes some of its best dramatic beats.

Is there a way around this error? It's entirely possible. The key here is for future Deadpool-centric movies to not brush off the return of Vanessa in a way that makes Deadpool 2 feel inconsequential. If we have to push forward and continue with her survival as the new canon, then the X-Men franchise will need to establish consequences for Wade's action. One way would be for the film to turn her into her comic book alter ego, known as Copycat, and allow her to fully embrace the villainous persona that some fans expected to see in the original Deadpool.

For those of you who are less familiar with the character, Vanessa Carlysle a.k.a Copycat is a shapeshifting mutant with powers similar to Mystique. She has appeared as a member of X-Force at specific points in her run as a comic book character, but she has also appeared as a villain across numerous X-Men titles over the years as well. The creative team behind 2016's Deadpool has admitted that it initially wanted to bring Copycat into the fold in the burgeoning franchise's initial outing, but with Wade's decision to save her using time travel, this could be a perfect opportunity to shift her to a tragic villain figure for future outings.

Deadpool 2 is currently in theaters and has officially dethroned Avengers: Infinity War as the king of the weekend box office. Edward Cullen and Bella Swan are making a big comeback on the screen. Seven years after Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 hit theaters, Lionsgate has planned a new series of movie events to engage fans.

The first Twilight movie is set to get an international tour set to live music, in which the movie will play and be accompanied by a full orchestra who will tackle Carter Burwells iconic music.

In an announcement, Lionsgate revealed that the first of these concerts will come out in August and will happen in Brazil. Subsequent shows will stop in places like Australia and the U.K.; the full set of dates is not available currently.

This isnt the first time Lionsgate has planned a series of events like this for fans, having also done this for the likes of The Hunger Games and La La Land. So far, 125 performances for these previous projects have already been successfully launched.

Insofar as Twilight goes, the fanbase is definitely still big enough for this sort of event. In fact, Im a little bit surprised an actual movie spinoff hasnt happened in the universe since the last flick wrapped in 2012. After all, the franchise has brought in $3.3 billion worldwide across four movies and clearly theres still an avid fanbase interested in Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, plus the Cullen family in general.

We even recently learned the Twilight franchise films have been big hits with a new audience over at Hulu.

Insofar as a reboot or remake goes, previously actor Kellan Lutz has talked about the budget constraints in the first movie, revealing he wouldnt mind if the powers that be remade Twilight, particularly to improve the CGI.

Definitely for the first movie, I think Twilight has the lowest budget out of all of them from New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, and I can only imagine what Catherine [Hardwicke] would do if she had a $59 million budget compared to ($37 million budget of the first.) So, I think they could remake the first one, but I don't think they could remake or should remake the franchise until there is some new technological advancement. I think the CGI was already top notch in the movies.

While this sort of new sort of screening event isnt the same thing as a new movie, these types of events have proven popular for a lot of different big and small screen properties. At other studios, programs like The Simpsons have done similar live projects. In addition, some properties with musical components have even delved into sing-a-long fan events, with The Greatest Showman being a prominent recent example.

Well let you know as soon as this particular Twilight event gets more details. In the meantime, you can relive the movies as well as plenty of other content on Hulu.
