What The Duke Nukem Movie Is Trying To Learn From Deadpools Success

With the recent release of Tomb Raider, the video game movie genre has finally taken a big step forward. With any luck, the genre will continue to grow with the eventual debut of the upcoming Duke Nukem movie. The adaptation of the fan-favorite shooter series has excited many nostalgic gamers hoping to see Duke's wiseass charm on the silver screen, and CinemaBlend recently had the chance to ask producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller what audiences can expect from the movie during an interview for their new film, A Quiet Place. Addressing their approach to Duke Nukem, Form explained that they learned a lot from Tim Miller's Deadpool regarding how to handle tone, saying:

We are working on Duke Nukem right now. It's going to be about tone. That's about tone. How do you nail that tone in the way that Deadpool nailed the tone? I think we have to do that and if we don't get the tone right then we're not going to make the movie.

Adapting intellectual property into a movie required filmmakers and producers to remember that a one-size-fits-all approach won't work. In the case of Deadpool, that film worked because it found a tone that matched the titular character and capitalized on Ryan Reynolds' ability to play a perfect smartass. That effect has not gone unnoticed throughout the film industry, and Andrew Form seems particularly interested in making sure that Duke Nukem can learn from Deadpool and find the tone to honor the source material and resonate with audiences. Moreover, the Duke Nukem games already play to very similar themes of meta-commentary on pop culture and satire of excessive masculinity, so the Deadpool roadmap seems worth following.

Beyond that, there are some inherent challenges to the creation of a Duke Nukem movie that wasn't necessarily an issue for the Deadpool movie. Chief among these is the fact that Duke Nukem, by his very nature, is kind of a sexist jerk who demeans women and eschews most forms of political correctness. Andrew Form also addressed those characteristics during his interview with me, saying:

You know that having a misogynistic guy in today's world, how do you make that fun and lovable and at the same time he's got to be an incredible badass, so those are the things that we're struggling with and we're going to try and come out with what I hope is a really fun ride. That's the goal, is for it to be a really fun ride.

One other element of the Duke Nukem movie that has raised numerous eyebrows in recent weeks is the possibility of Blockers actor John Cena stepping into the titular role. The potential casting makes sense when we consider the muscle-bound machismo that Cena brings to the table, and Andrew Form made sure to confirm that Cena (as of right now) is definitely onboard as their Duke. Form explained:

Yeah, that's what we're working with now. He is. Yes. We don't have a script yet, so that is confirmed at this point but if he reads the script and he doesn't like the script I'm sure there's ways that he could pull out, but right now he's our guy.

Dave Baustita's relationship with Marvel and Disney remains rocky in the wake of James Gunn's dismissal from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but one thing that hasn't changed for the actor is the love for his character, Drax the Destroyer. Being cast as the alien warrior launched Bautista's acting career to new heights, and Avengers 4 next year will mark Bautista's fourth appearance as Drax. Bautista appreciates the character so much that he'd like for him to take the spotlight for himself someday in a movie that sheds light on his past, even if Bautista isn't in the lead role. As Bautista answered when asked what he'd like to see next for Drax:

I really wish they would tell the story of Drax's family. I think it's a beautiful story and I think it's been lost and overlooked a little bit. It's a beautiful and heartbreaking emotional thing to know where that love for his family and that heartbreak over his family being lost and murdered, where it comes from I think... I really pushed and fought for the Drax standalone film, but I don't think it's ever going to happen. I really wish they would because I think there's a story to be told there and I think the fans would really love to see that story, even if it's not me portraying Drax, I just still think it is an interesting story to tell.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's backstory for Drax the Destroyer is significantly different than how it is in the comics, with one of the biggest changes being that Drax's wife and daughter were killed by Ronan the Accuser. Drax finally carried out vengeance against Ronan at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, but like his comic book counterpart, he then turned his attention to eliminating Thanos, as Ronan had been carrying out the Mad Titan's orders. As Dave Bautista told MTV International, he sees potential for Marvel to put together a prequel story showing what Drax's life was like with his family and how he lost them, even if that means another actor ends up portraying Drax. However, as Bautista also noted, despite his best efforts, it's doubtful such a project will ever move forward.

Although Marvel has dipped into the prequel realm with Captain America: The First Avenger and the upcoming Captain Marvel, the franchise has yet to turn the clock back for a movie centered on a hero who has already been introduced. So chances are slim that Drax the Destroyer will ever lead his own movie, although I am curious to learn more about what his life was like when he was a family man. Marvel has released MCU tie-in comic book preludes for most of its movies before, so perhaps one day there will be an opportunity to elaborate on Drax's past on the printed page.

As far as Dave Bautista's time with Drax the Destroyer is concerned, while he will appear in Avengers 4 (meaning that he'll almost certainly be revived alongside all the other heroes Thanos dusted in Infinity War), his involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has become far from guaranteed since late July. Bautista has been especially vocal about his dissatisfaction with James Gunn being fired, to the point that he said last month that if Marvel and Disney didn't use Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script, then he'd ask to be released from his contract. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's production is currently on hold.

Thor: Ragnaroks Honest Trailer Pokes Fun At The Marvel Movies Colorful Weirdness

As far as individual franchises are concerned, the Thor films have stood out as an arguably weaker element of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then Taika Waititi got his hands on Thor: Ragnarok and catapulted Thor Odinson to the status of an upper echelon Avenger. Now, with the film's home release finally upon us, a hilarious Honest Trailer has debuted online to poke fun at the film's delightful weirdness. Check out the video, below.

Right off the bat, one major thing worth noting about this video is the way it focuses on how much Thor: Ragnarok omits from its story. Between Jane Foster, Lady Sif, the dead Warriors Three and many fan-favorite Asgardians, Ragnarok ultimately distills its story down to the basics of the Thor mythos and only keeps anything that's necessary to tell this specific story. It's about stripping things away from Thor (even Mjolnir and his long hair) and creating something entirely new that feels like it's been made in the spirit of classic Jack Kirby comics. Instead of the same old Thor story, we saw Hulk fighting a giant zombie wolf on a rainbow bridge, and it was so worth it.

Even with that poignant assessment, the above video also manages to make some other funny observations about Thor: Ragnarok as well. Chief among these is the sheer number of jokes peppered throughout the film, as well as the fact that Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch arguably seemed obligated to be in the movie to pave the way for Avengers: Infinity War. Then there's Jeff Goldblum, who is basically just playing the eccentric Jeff Goldblum that we all know and love.

Of course, this video isn't just limited to critiques of Marvel films. It even manages to poke some fun at the competition over at the DCEU by likening the post-Justice League landscape to that of Sakaar's trash-ridden surface.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, one of the final points made by this Honest Trailer is the fact that Marvel succeeded by trusting an eccentric director with a clear sense of authorship over his work. Taika Waititi was known for his work on smaller indie films like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople before being hired to work on Thor: Ragnarok, and he managed to transfer much of his weirdness over to the film in a remarkable way. Now that he has proven a "weirdo" can make a great Marvel movie, maybe we'll eventually come to a point where someone over at Marvel Studios goes back to Baby Driver's Edgar Wright and tries to get him back onboard following his departure from the original Ant-Man.

Thor: Ragnarok is now available on Digital HD, DVD, and Blu-ray. As for the God of Thunder's next adventure on the big screen, keep an eye out for the Asgardian hero when Avengers: Infinity War hits its new premiere date on April 27.

By far, one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! 2017 is definitely the reign of Marvel. I have to admit that the Thor films weren't the best, but this one is remarkable.
