Fan Made Darth Vader Movie Is Chilling And Epic

The Star Wars franchise is a fascinating place. Arguably the biggest movie franchise of all time, George Lucas' colorful world has enthralled generations of moviegoers. And with Disney in charge of Lucasfilm, there are plenty of new and exciting projects coming to the galaxy far, far away.

Disney has been methodically releasing new Star Wars projects, including main installments, standalone films, and upcoming series for the Disney+ service. Moviegoers were especially excited for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which allowed the beloved Darth Vader character to return in an epic fashion. The fandom is eager for more Vader, and now a fan has made a short film all about Vader and The Emperor. Check out Shards of The Past below.

Does anyone else have chills? This new fan film shows the conflicted nature of Darth Vader at the height of his darkness, showing that Anakin Skywalker was apparently inside him all along. It helps make his actions in Return of The Jedi make more sense, and expands the franchise's signature character in a fascinating way.

The above film is titled Vader Episode 1: Shards Of The Past - Star Wars Theory FanFilm, and is set sometime in between the events of Revenge of The Sith and before Darth Vader eventually appeared as the main villain in A New Hope. That gap of time is briefly addressed in Rogue One, but Vader's time as a Jedi-killing agent of evil is still largely unaccounted for in the official canon. As such, Shards of The Past helps fill in the blanks in a way that fans are definitely responding to.

The above video shows how Darth Vader was still very conflicted while working for The Emperor. Despite hating Obi-Wan and leaving the Jedi behind, there is one thing that haunts the masked villain: his wife's death. Anakin is the reason for Padme's death in Episode III, with Natalie Portman's character passing after giving birth to a young Luke and Leia. In addition to force choking Padme, Vader's turn to the dark side ended her will to live, and her body shut down.

It's a heartbreaking twist for the galactic couple, and certainly one that would presumably haunt Anakin. But other than his cringe-y "No!!", the Star Wars franchise has never really addressed how Padme's death affected Vader. Until now.

Shards of The Past has already gone viral, as the Star Wars fans are really responding to the focus on Darth Vader. At the time of writing, the short has a whopping 330K views, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Because if there's one thing that Star War fans love, it's Vader.

It should be fascinating to see if/how Vader is used in future installments of the Star Wars franchise. The Skywalker Saga will come to an end with J.J. Abrams' Episode IX, so it's not out of the question that Anakin might pop back up as a Force Ghost in the movie. And standalone movies, Rian Johnson's trilogy, and The Mandalorian TV series all present opportunities for Darth Vader to pop back up.

The galaxy far, far away will return to theaters when Episode IX arrives on December 20th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

Skyscraper Is The Only Big Budget Non-Sequel This Month

Skyscraper Is The Only Big Budget Non-Sequel This Month

This summer, Dwayne Johnson is back in another one of his big-budget action movies. Skyscraper has one of the biggest movie stars in the world in a Die Hard-esque adventure where he has to stop a group of criminals while trapped inside the most advanced building in the world. The movie is arriving in a month where every other major release is either a sequel or somehow tied to a franchise, but that just might be one of Skyscraper's greatest strengths, according to producer Beau Flynn.

There are 10 sequels on the left and right of us in our release window, which is really sobering in a way. It's so important to us to make original movies and try to create something different. And a huge part of why we get to do that is Dwayne Johnson.

There are definitely a lot of sequels coming out in July. Among the major releases this month are films like Ant-Man and the Wasp, The First Purge, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, The Equalizer 2, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. That's a lot of sequels, with Skyscraper as the only big-budget original movie that can compete with them. However, part of the reason for that is Dwayne Johnson. He's a really bankable star, and his presence in the movie is why it can have such a large budget. In this way, Johnson is helping to promote original films and help them compete in ways that they ordinarily couldn't.

However, it should be noted that while July is packed with sequels, August actually has a lot of original or non-sequel movies hitting theaters. Films like The Meg, Mile 22, The Spy Who Dumped Me, BlacKkKlansman, and Crazy Rich Asians are all in August, which is actually a little refreshing.

Additionally, in the case of Skyscraper, part of the appeal was that it was an original movie with a throwback action movie feel that didn't cost a tremendous amount (relatively speaking) to make. The budget for the movie was actually $125 million, which is still a lot of money, but it's low compared to some of the other blockbuster films out there. Dwayne Johnson further detailed this while talking to the Los Angeles Times.

Well, the original scripts that are coming in are certainly not coming in at this size and scale. Of course, in today's market there are superhero movies and sequels and big franchises, which work very well and they're very entertaining, and it's what we do. But with Skyscraper, the original IP [intellectual property] made it very appealing. I think there was also something interesting to the studios in that we were going to be cost-conscious and create a summer movie that didn't have to be $250 million. You could cut that in half and it would still feel like a big, entertaining movie.

If anyone can pull off a movie like Skyscraper, it's The Rock. The film looks super fun, and I'm sure that people will be filling the theater to check it all out. If Johnson can create a franchise out of fighting an earthquake, he can do anything.

Skyscraper arrives in theaters next weekend on July 13. For more movie news, keep it right here at CinemaBlend.

Sean Connery Co-Wrote A James Bond Movie That Never Got Made

Sean Connery Co-Wrote A James Bond Movie That Never Got Made

At this point, it would seem like James Bond has done everything a super spy could possibly do. And yet, the original big screen Bond, Sean Connery, was once involved in writing a James Bond story that never made it to theaters. The movie would have been called Warhead and while it started life as a remake of Thunderball, it would have gone off in some very interesting directions, including robot sharks carrying atomic bombs through the sewers of New York.

The story of Warhead is actually the story of a much better known James Bond story, Thunderball. Back in 1958, before any James Bond novels had been turned into films, a man named Kevin McClory and another screenwriter wrote, with Ian Fleming's blessing, an original Bond story that was going to be the first Bond movie. The movie wasn't made, but Fleming, who had actually been the one to come up with the title, ended up using elements of Thunderball for his own James Bond novel. McClory sued Fleming and won, which resulted in McClory owning the film rights to the story.

When Eon Productions wanted to turn Thunderball into the studio's fourth Bond movie, they made a deal with Kevin McClory that gave him the right to remake the movie 10 years later. Thus, in 1975 work began on the Thunderball remake, which became known as Warhead. By 1975, Sean Connery had already given way to Roger Moore in the role of James Bond and, according to the BBC, McClory wanted Sean Connery's name attached to Warhead in whatever way he could get it, which meant getting him on board as one of the screenwriters.

It's unclear how much Sean Connery actually contributed to the script for Warhead. He has no official film credits as a writer in his career and had never been attached as one before, and would never be again, so it's possible Connery's name was really just there for the press it would generate, but either way, it was there.

While Warhead and Thunderball were still mostly the same story, this new version did see a lot of changes, such as the aforementioned robot sharks and a finale that saw Bond fighting Spectre goons at the top of the Statue of Liberty.

Eventually, just as a lawsuit helped create Warhead, another ended up killing it. Eon Productions and McClory ended up filing injunctions against each other, with each side claiming that the other had stolen material from them. Some elements of the then in production The Spy Who Loved Me were awfully similar to elements in Warhead. Not wanting to get involved in the legal issues, both Sean Connery and Paramount Pictures, who was originally going to back Warhead, backed out, and when that happened Warhead fell apart.

Kevin McClory would eventually get his Thunderball remake in 1983 with Never Say Never Again, but the less said about that, the better.

Few actors embody what it means to be a Hollywood star like Sean Connery. Long before the role of secret agent James Bond became a right of passage for talented British stars, Connery was the man who turned the 007 franchise into a global success. But Connery's life has just as many surprising
