What James Gunn Now Says About His Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Firing

It was a shockwave that rippled through the San Diego Comic-Con community, even though it didn't involve a project that was on the ground in Southern California. James Gunn, the heart and soul of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, was removed from the third movie in the series -- which is heading into pre-production within months -- because of offensive tweets that were unearthed on his Twitter timeline. Disney's decision to sever ties with Gunn was swift, and final. Some of Gunn's Guardians have come to his defense. Now, though, the writer/director himself has issued a statement, which reads:

My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since --- not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time. ... Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all.

Speaking from a creative standpoint, this is a real blow. The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has James Gunn's fingerprints all over it, and while a movie like Thor: Ragnarok shows how Taika Waititi can come in and juice up a bland series, I'm not sure who steps in a provides the same colorful spark and attitude that Gunn brought to those films. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would have been a trilogy capper that concluded the story Gunn began back in 2014. Now that will fall to another filmmaker.

As of now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is slated to hit theaters in 2020, though we don't know the release date of it yet. There are still so many stones that need to drop regarding the storylines of Avengers 4 and Captain Marvel, and they could all have an impact on what happens with the Guardians' story. And, now that we think about it, a fair number of the current team is dead, having dusted at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Could the actors ask not to come back? And what of Sean Gunn, who does the motion capture for Rocket? Does he continue to work in the Guardians/MCU realm?

The questions, in the wake of this firing, continue to pile up. We'll bring you the answers as we have them.

That Time The Tag Cast Got Wild With Golf Carts On Set

That Time The Tag Cast Got Wild With Golf Carts On Set

We have already seen a few solid comedies debut this year, but the definition of slapstick is about to take on an entirely new meaning with the debut of Tag. The buddy comedy features an all-star cast of comedic actors like Mad Men's Jon Hamm and New Girl's Jake Johnson, and all of them throw themselves into the movie with some genuinely wacky antics on display. In fact, CinemaBlend recently sat down with Tag star Ed Helms to discuss the film, and he opened up about how the cast was allowed to go crazy with a set of souped-up golf carts while filming one specific scene. The Hangover star told us:

You know, the golf cart chase. There's a great gold cart chase scene. We got a little aggressive filming that. These were souped-up golf carts because a normal golf cart can only go what, 15 miles per hour? These had some adjustment on them, so we could actually zoom around, and things got a little wild, but we all made it. We're all okay.

Tag centers on a group of friends who get together every year and hang out, and it really seems like that shined through, because these guys had fun working on the movie together. Specifically, when it came time to film the golf cart chase seen in the movie's trailers, the ensemble was given carte blanche to go nuts with the modified engines and go wild on the set. It sounds somewhat dangerous, but Ed Helms made sure to note that everyone was okay when all was said and done.

The concern over safety was probably a big issue on the set of Tag, as the production did not entirely go off without a hitch. Specifically, Jeremy Renner suffered two broken arms while filming a stunt in the movie, the details of which sound particularly gruesome. That said, despite The Avengers star's misfortune, nothing bad happened when the time came to go wild on those carts.

If you want a closer look at our chat with Ed Helms, check out a clip from the Tag interview below!

Based on a true story, Tag tells the tale of a group of friends who have been playing the same game of Tag every May for the last three decades. However, when Jerry (Jeremy Renner) decides to retire from the game ahead of his nuptials, the group descends upon his wedding to tag him and end his perfect winning streak.

Tag opens in theaters today, so make sure to check the R-rated buddy comedy out to see the wild golf cart chase for yourselves! As always, if you are on the lookout for even more information about Tag, you can also check out our in-depth review of the film, as well as our review roundup to see what other critics are saying about it!

Creed II KO'd All The Other Rocky Movies At The Box Office On Opening Weekend

Creed II KO'd All The Other Rocky Movies At The Box Office On Opening Weekend

Wreck-It Ralph was the undisputed box office champ over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but on the live-action side of things, Adonis Creed beat back wizards and archers to have his hand raised. Creed II's success was also historic for this over 40-year-old franchise, as Steven Caple Jr.'s sequel film KO'd all of the other Rocky movies at the box office on opening weekend.

Creed II punched out $35.293 million at the box office over the Friday to Sunday frame, giving it the biggest debut ever for a sports drama, according to Forbes. That also means that it is the biggest debut ever for a boxing drama. Therefore Creed II's opening weekend now reigns supreme over all seven of the previous films in the long-running Rocky franchise.

Ryan Coogler's Creed from 2015 was the previous opening weekend record holder for the series with $29.63 million, followed by 1985's Rocky IV, which debuted with $19.99 million (unadjusted for inflation).

Creed II's $35.293 million was also good enough to be the biggest debut ever for a live-action film opening over Thanksgiving, not counting for inflation. Disney usually dominates the family-centric Thanksgiving, as it did this year with Ralph Breaks the Internet, but Creed II's three and five-day numbers were still the biggest ever for a non-Disney release over the holiday.

Creed II technically opened on Wednesday, before the Thanksgiving holiday, with Tuesday night preview screenings. So over the long weekend, Creed II collected $55.806 million, easily covering its budget, which was somewhere around $40 million.

The film was more front-loaded too than its predecessor, which makes sense considering that the first Creed was something of an unknown when it came out. But it received great reviews and audiences caught up with the story, so they knew what they were getting with Creed II and were excited about it seeing it opening weekend, leading to the sequel's superior performance.

Creed II's box office gives it the best opening for a Rocky movie ever, so now it's just a question of whether it will have the legs to become the biggest movie in the franchise domestically. Currently Rocky IV, which Creed II is something of a sequel to, is the highest grossing Rocky movie domestically with $127 million. The first Creed topped out at $110 million but if Creed II enjoys similar staying power, it could deliver a knock out punch to Rocky IV.

Creed II does have the nostalgia and fan service factor going for it, and the rest of the year is filled with either big franchises or small awards fare, so the film should stand out to audiences as something different to see. Even if Creed II doesn't beat Rocky IV, it could still best Creed at the domestic box office, an uncommon feat for a sequel which shows how viable this franchise is, especially considering its mid-budget cost.

Creed II is now playing in theaters. Check out the other movies still to come this holiday in our Holiday Movie Guide.
