Bob Odenkirk Says Incredibles 2 Was A Rush Job

Incredibles 2 is finally opening in theaters this weekend and it is poised for an incredible performance at the box office, proving that audiences haven't forgotten about the ParrfFamily since the first film. It took a long time, 14 years all told, to get a sequel to 2004's The Incredibles, and it would have been easy to think that it was never going to happen. However, although it took a decade plus for the movie to hit theaters, that doesn't mean that it was in production that whole time or in some sort of development hell. In fact, production on Incredibles 2 was actually something of a rush job, as Bob Odenkirk, who plays Winston Deavor in the film, explained:

I know that the movie was done in a shorter amount of time because they had more confidence in the story. Brad had confidence in the story that he had. Pixar usually takes more time than this. It felt like a fairly long time to me, but they were like, 'This is a rush job for us because we believe in it.'

Pixar movies generally take a long time to come together, as the studio will repeatedly go back to the drawing board and delay movies in order to get the story right. Yet in the case of Incredibles 2, which was announced in 2014, the film came together rather quickly for a Pixar film. As Bob Odenkirk told IndieWire, this was because Pixar and director Brad Bird had confidence in the story for the film, so a drawn-out production process to get every beat pitch perfect was unnecessary. So while the production on Incredibles 2 may have seemed like a long time to Bob Odenkirk (and us), it was actually a little bit quicker than it might otherwise have been on another Pixar film.

The confidence they had in the eagerly awaited sequel actually allowed Incredibles 2 to be rushed to completion and released much sooner than was originally intended. Incredibles 2 was originally set for a 2019 release date, but back in 2016, the sequel swapped dates with another long in development sequel, Toy Story 4, which the studio didn't have as much confidence in at that point and have since made some changes to behind the scenes. This swap moved the release date for Incredibles 2 up a whole year. Considering how often we see films delayed or cancelled outright because of production problems and trouble cracking the story, to see a film come out a whole year ahead of schedule is pretty remarkable.

It's no surprise that Pixar had confidence in the film and especially Brad Bird. The writer and director delivered The Incredibles and Ratatouille for the studio. If you can't trust him, who can you trust? And judging by the final product, you can see why Pixar and Brad Bird were confident, because Incredibles 2 doesn't feel at all like a rush job and delivers an incredible superhero tale with the family that we've been waiting 14 years to see again.

What Star Wars Should Do Instead Of A Normal Solo Sequel

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story. If you have not yet seen the film, and don't wish to know any important details about the end, please bookmark this page and save it until after your screening!By the time Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story starts to wrap up, it begins making what are clearly steps towards setting up a sequel. Not only does Alden Ehrenreich's Han learn about the Jabba The Hutt job on Tatooine that was first mentioned all the way back in 1977, but it's also revealed that Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra is serving the insidious Darth Maul (Ray Park/Sam Witwer) in his evil machinations. From a narrative perspective alone, these threads are more than enough to justify making a direct follow-up, and it's easy to understand why a franchise as cocky as Star Wars would want those hints dropped in. However, those decisions were all made before the film was completed and released to mass audiences.

Now fans have had a chance to see the finished movie... and the response hasn't exactly been overwhelming. Its opening weekend results are far and away the weakest in the modern era of the franchise, with a number of factors contributing including intense competition, brand fatigue, and mediocre buzz. As a result, an important question is left looming: how does Star Wars deal with the dangling plot threads? The typical Hollywood thing to do would be to craft a Solo 2 and hope for better results, but that really isn't the best option on the table. Instead, when it comes to following up, Lucasfilm might instead be much better off creatively utilizing some of their rumored upcoming projects - specifically the developing Boba Fett and the rumored Lando.

To be frank, making a Han Solo origin movie was a troubling concept from the beginning. Star Wars is a franchise with an unfortunate legacy when it comes to prequels about beloved central characters, and even with Phil Lord and Chris Miller originally at the helm (the men known specifically for turning bad ideas into good ones) it seemed like troubling proposition. There's a problematic urge in these movies to answer questions that nobody ever asked, and Solo did exactly that. Instead, the drive should be to dive deeper into the characters we know less about, and that's exactly what Boba Fett and Lando can do. At the same time, however, those movies can also be utilized unlike any other franchise sequels in history: picking up a story from a previous title and continuing it with a different protagonist.

Shortly before Solo: A Star Wars Story hit theaters last weekend, it was announced that director James Mangold would be taking the helm of the Boba Fett movie, and one can hope that timing has an extra bit of coincidence wrapped into it. After all, the famed Mandalorian bounty hunter is known to have a past relationship with both Han Solo and Jabba The Hutt -- so what if they wound up being supporting characters in his perspective-driven story? Perhaps Jabba gives the smuggling job to Han, but doesn't trust him so he hires Boba to track him and make sure he is doing his job. And given Boba's connection with the Empire (as established in The Empire Strikes Back), perhaps you even set up a twist that reveals he had something to do with Han getting boarded and forced to dump his cargo, as described by Han during his Mos Eisley Cantina conversation with Greedo in A New Hope.

From there, Lando could round out a trilogy. There remains an unclear path that takes the smooth operator from his losing game of Sabacc with Han to his position as Baron-Administrator of Cloud City, and this film could fill the gaps while also continuing threads from Boba Fett -- which would also have Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian as a key supporting role. While not exactly an origin story, the movie could serve to contextualize a character who has never been given a ton of context, and has some built in emotional conflict given the deal he winds up making with the Empire to give up Han, Leia, Chewie and C-3PO.

As of right now, it doesn't really look like the Star Wars franchise has much of a plan. With the exception of J.J. Abrams' untitled Star Wars: Episode IX, none of the other developing projects have release dates, including not only James Mangold's Boba Fett: A Star Wars Story, but also the separate trilogies being developed by Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, respectively. There doesn't seem to be a ton of order to all of the goings-on -- but the plan proposed here could help to streamline some of the ideas. Right now we can't say if it is even a possibility that this could play out, but it's an idea worth considering.

At the kickoff of this year's South By Southwest film festival, 20th Century Fox took advantage of a rare opportunity. With the eyes of the film world on Austin Texas, Fox opened the doors to Robert Rodriguez's Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and used the event as a means to tease the upcoming and hotly anticipated Alita: Battle Angel. Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado, Spy Kids) inherited the adaptation of Alita from James Cameron, who had been tinkering with Yukito Kishiro's graphic novel Gunnm for years.

We saw new footage from Alita: Battle Angel -- due in theaters in December -- then spent time with leading lady Rosa Salazar, who opened up about the motion-capture technology that is being used to bring her character, Alita, to life. In the unfinished footage that we watched, Salazar wears the facial dots and camera harnesses that Robert Rodriguez relies on to capture her performance, so that WETA can translate it to a character in post. When I asked Salazar (Parenthood, Maze Runner: The Death Cure) if she ever got used to the mo-cap harness, she explained:

When you're in a scene with someone, it all melts away. I know that sounds kind of unbelievable, but it does! When you take a restroom break, it doesn't melt away. Because you are sitting there with a helmet on and two cameras pointed straight at your face, and you're just trying to pee. In those moments, it doesn't really... you're like, 'this is pretty extraordinary.' But it's just learning a new set of skills. It's just learning a new language, and I always want to do films that test my limits that way, and push me to find a new method of doing things.

We have seen motion-capture make leaps and bounds, particularly in the Planet of the Apes series that's also housed at Fox. Andy Serkis and the wizards at WETA are working on an annual basis to perfect the techniques that can bring a character like Caesar, or like Alita for Robert Rodriguez, to life on screen. One challenge for Rosa Salazar, though, was the fact that because WETA has to work on her look, she can't get an instant gratification of watching clean playback from her daily performance. When I asked her about that obstacle, she found a silver lining, elaborating:

On the one hand, it frees you from doing a nosedive into insecurity land, where you start to pick apart your own performance. You're an actress. You're too close to it. You're not the director. That can be a little bit dangerous, the territory of playback watching. But here, you watch playback, and you can actually see a digital version of Alita and her face. A very raw rendering, but you can see how things are going to move. It takes you out of the 'How's it going to be? How's it going to look?' zone and it puts your into, 'Oh, OK, if I'm going to move my hand this way, I need to move it all the way back.' Because to translate your actual physical movements into that conduit, you just have to figure that out. You're really just interested in the process. It's an all-new process.

Netflix may not be known for having the best movies, but the streaming service does offer a wide variety of unique and interesting titles. Nevertheless, even with the streaming service's deluge of content for all tastes, 'guy getting his penis cut off' would not have had my money in the Netflix greenlight pool. I know what you're thinking, this has to be a horror movie right? Because having your penis cut off is no laughing matter. But nope, The Package is a comedy and looks like it will deliver some laughs from this nightmarish scenario. Check out the trailer for Netflix's The Package below:

The Package follows in the proud tradition of movies where people go to the woods and things go hilariously wrong. In this instance, accidentally cutting off your penis (seriously, what are you doing, dude?) while deep in the woods and far from medical attention. This premise is silly, but it looks like it should deliver some fun laughs as this group of friends races to save their friend's most prized possession. The ineptitude displayed by the out of their depth group is pretty funny, as they are clearly ill-equipped to handle this situation. The trailer doesn't show any of the inevitable dick jokes, but I can already see arguments over who picks it up, and a mad search for a cooler with awkwardness and fumbling idiocy leading to laughs.

This trailer definitely gives off a bit of a Superbad vibe, and I imagine that's what they are going for with plenty of raunchiness and cursing. These teens are all just looking to have a good time and break free from ordinary life and responsibilities while also dealing with awkward crushes. Just like in Superbad and many other teen comedies, those awkward crushes lead to some cringe-worthy moments, as attempting to play it cool leads to embarrassment and physical pain. There's a fun chemistry with the cast in the trailer and hopefully the story and jokes can capitalize on that.

The film features a race against time to make their friend whole again, but it does seem like there is some sort of other calamitous obstacle or event beyond that has the characters questioning their decision to go camping. The trailer teases that something is being held back from the trailer, and since we already get to see that Jeremy, played by Eduardo Franco, cuts off his own penis in a display of otherworldly stupidity, I can't imagine what plot point they are teasing us with.

Jake Szymanski, who also helmed Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, directs The Package, which premieres on Netflix on August 10.
