There was a 14 year gap between Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World, but it was clear that the passage of time did not affect people's enthusiasm for seeing dinosaurs cause pandemonium on the big screen. Jurassic World went on to make $1.672 billion worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing movie of 2015, tailing only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Three years later, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has been enjoying its own commercial success, and now the sequel has also crossed the $1 billion mark around the world.
It had already been predicted that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom would hit $1 billion on the film's domestic opening weekend, but it's official now as it reaches its first month in theaters globally. Breaking the numbers down, Fallen Kingdom currently has a domestic total of $304.8 million and an international total of $700.7 million. That latter figure includes $245.2 million from China, with Fallen Kingdom becoming the #5 Western title in that country. Fallen Kingdom also has yet to open in Japan, but THR's report states that the sequel won't come close to reaching Jurassic World's worldwide total. Nevertheless, this is still a big win for Universal, making it the only studio outside of Disney to have at least two titles from three separate franchises cross $1 billion worldwide, the other two Universal franchises being Fast and Furious and Despicable Me.
As things stand now, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the third highest-grossing movie worldwide of 2018, trailing behind Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. However, there's still the other half of the year to go, so it's possible there will be a blockbuster that knocks Fallen Kingdom lower down on the list. Regardless, Fallen Kingdom, like its predecessor, has demonstrated itself to be a commercial powerhouse, and there's still weeks to go for it to keep hauling in the big bucks in theaters worldwide. That said, critically speaking, Fallen Kingdom has been a more mixed affair than Jurassic World, ranking at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.
With J.A. Bayona taking the directing reins from Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom saw Bryce Dallas Howard's Claire Dearing and Chris Pratt's Owen Grady traveling back to Isla Nublar to rescue as many dinosaurs as possible before the volcano on the island erupted, only to discover a sinister conspiracy at work. The dino-filled fun won't stop with this movie, though, as Jurassic World 3 has been given the green light, with Trevorrow returning to the director's chair for the threequel.
