Lin-Manuel Miranda Had A Very Hard Time With One Mary Poppins Scene

Disney has released a new Star Wars movie for the past three Decembers, and made a ton of money in the process. But with J.J. Abrams' Episode IX not arriving for another year, there's an opening for box office supremacy this holiday season. The House of Mouse is still making a play in theaters, as Mary Poppins Returns will finally provide a follow up to the 1964 original classic.

Set a few decades after the events of the first film, Mary Poppins Returns brings the practically perfect nanny back to Cherry Tree Lane to once again look after the Banks children. Emily Blunt is playing the beloved title character, with Hamilton writer/actor Lin-Manuel Miranda playing newcomer Jack the lamplighter. And it turns out that the opening number contains a scene that was extremely difficult for the acclaimed theatre figure. As he tells it,

There's one scene in this movie where I light a lamp, ride a bike, steal an apple from a cart, throw it to an orphan child, all while singing in a Cockney accent. That moment is the hardest 10 seconds of my life.

Making movies can be a difficult task, as it often takes a ton of technical work to achieve even the most simple of shots. And for Lin-Manuel Miranda's silver screen debut, he was challenged by having to multitask while performing to the camera during a musical number. Don't worry, he wasn't throwing away his shot.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's comments come from his recent appearance on Ellen, where the acclaimed composer spoke to Ellen Degeneres about his upcoming role in Mary Poppins Returns. Miranda has collaborated with Disney quite a few times over the years, but the Mary Poppins sequel marks new ground for the Hamilton and In The Heights writer.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's role in Mary Poppins Returns likely made the actor nervous, so the intricate nature of his musical numbers must have added to the pressure of playing Jack. In addition to singing, acting, and dancing, Miranda had to adopt a cockney accent, modeled after the one used by Dick Van Dyke in the original Mary Poppins. The character also gets around London by way of bike, adding an added level of complexity to many of Jacks' scenes.

In his conversation with Ellen Degeneres, Lin-Manuel Miranda also mentioned his lighting of a lamp. As Jack is a lamplighter, Miranda had to work with live fire during plenty of his scenes as well. The trailers for Mary Poppins Returns tease a big song and dance number with the lamplighters, a la "Step In Time" from the 1964 original. It's clear that Disney is pulling out all the stops for the highly anticipated sequel, with performers like Lin-Manuel Miranda balancing a ton of responsibilities to bring the movie to life.

Jack's bicycle is clearly a macguffin that's going to be used a variety of times throughout Mary Poppins Returns, as shots from the marketing material also reveal a wild ride that Jack takes the three Banks children (and Mary!) on. Just check it out below.

Of course, Lin-Manuel Miranda has some very big shoes to fill, as he's occupying the space held by the great Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. His iconic character Bert isn't set to appear in Mary Poppins Returns, likely due to Van Dyke's age, and the juxtaposition that would have to Emily Blunt's ageless Mary. But Miranda plays Jack, a protegee of Bert's who helps her guide the Banks children during her second visit to Cherry Tree Lane.

Luckily, Dick Van Dyke is still going to be included in the upcoming sequel. But rather than reprising his role as Bert in Mary Poppins Returns, he'll actually be playing Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. Banks played Dawes Sr. in the original film, with the help of old age makeup and a favor by Walt Disney himself. With Van Dyke still included in the cast, he seems to passing the torch (or kite, as the case my be) to another actor.

Like Bert in the first film, it seems that Lin-Manuel Miranda's Jack will likely be a major presence in Mary Poppins Returns. In addition to his giant pyrotechnic dance number with the lamplighters, Jack will also be around for some of the sequel's biggest adventures. This includes the highly anticipated animated sequence, which will feature the return of the first film's dancing penguins. It should be interesting to see if he's also got a romantic flirtation with Mary like Bert, or if his affections are aimed somewhere else.

While Lin-Manuel Miranda is an acclaimed composer who has won awards for both of his Broadway musicals, he actually doesn't have a hand in writing the new songs for Mary Poppins Returns. That honor goes to Hairspray scribe Marc Shaiman, allowing Miranda to fully focus on his role as an actor in the new sequel. But fear not Hamilton fans, he'll be doing some form of rapping in Mary Poppins Returns.

The pressure is on for everyone involved to deliver with Mary Poppins Returns. The original 1964 movie is a beloved piece of moviemaking, and has been passed down across the generations. A sequel is a lofty goal, but luckily director Rob Marshall seems to be a major fan of the first film. So while the musical numbers and Emily Blunt's performance will no doubt be compared to Julie Andrews' beloved movie, the reverence and appreciation for the first Mary Poppins is there.

Mary Poppins Returns picks up on Jane and Michael Banks, who have grown into adults since we last saw them. Following a family tragedy, Mary Poppins comes back to Cherry Tree Lane in order to look out for the children of the family-- all of them. Like many Disney movies, this tragedy is the loss of a parent- Michael's wife and the mother of his three children. So bring your tissues and prepare for the musical numbers.

Why Michael Myers Spared That Baby In Halloween

As far as horror franchises go, there are none quite as beloved and iconic as Halloween. John Carpenter's original 1978 movie created the mold for slashers as we know it, and brought Jamie Lee Curtis to stardom as a young actress. The property has once again returned to the top of pop culture, as Blumhouse's Halloween arrived in theaters, telling an emotional and thrilling story about Laurie Strode and her family.

One of the most chilling sequences from the new Halloween came when Michael finally arrived back in Haddonfield, and began wandering through a neighborhood, and both killing and sparing victims at random. This includes a baby, who Michael ultimately spares during the long shot. Director David Gordon Green recently spoke to this scene, and the decision for Michael to leave without harming the small child.

And now we're looking at a character who I proclaim is the essence of evil and has no motivation, no emotion, no real stimulation other than being a predator. And yet we've given him this one consideration in which he does the right thing. So I'm not exactly sure how to stand by that and justify that, although I think it's fascinating to think of someone that is nothing but a cold-blooded, faceless, motivation-less killer. He made one decision that we are happy that he made.

Now this is fascinating. Part of what makes Michael Myers such a compelling villain in the first Halloween is his total lack of character or clear motivation. This was eventually scrapped when Laurie and Michael were made siblings, therefore giving him logical reason for hunting down the OG scream queen. But Blumhouse abandoned all the sequels for their Halloween, once again allowing Michael to become an agent of pure chaos.

Having Michael actually spare a victim, especially one so innocent, was no doubt a strange experience for hardcore fans of the franchise. The masked killer has only ever been seen murdering countless victims, so there hasn't been an opportunity for moviegoers to agree with him decisions. That is, until he decided not to kill an adorable baby.

Apart from showing a new side of Michael, David Gordon Green also revealed that his moment with the baby actually started as a timing matter, as there was extra time in the already iconic long shot of Michael's rampage. As Green told LA Times,

We were looking for an interesting 15-second gap in a long sequence. And there were 15 seconds, no tension, no new information. And the goal was, 'How do we put something that's 15 seconds' worth of intrigue in the sequence?' And the production designer and the DP came up with the idea of putting a baby crib in the living room and then a baby. It was one of the things that was just exciting, and it fixed the problem; it filled the gap

Sometimes moviemaking is just about logistics, and making things up on the fly. David Gordon Green and the producers seemed open to suggestions when filming their own Halloween movie, and thus the baby moment was, well, born. And these choices seem to have paid off, as Halloween is making a ton of money at the box office, with possible sequel talk already happening.

You'd think the hype for Star Wars Episode IX couldn't be any bigger, but Kevin Smith has seen the film in production, and he was completely blown away. The director recently spoke about visiting the set of the movie currently in production and while he, of course, couldn't go into specifics, Smith told GMA Day that seeing the movie in production, and one performance in particular, brought him to tears. J.J.'s doing the lord's work. This movie looks fantastic. It's a year away, but man, it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I've seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I've ever seen in my life. The dude's not directing a movie. It's like he's directing a small country.

Kevin Smith tells GMA Day that he had to sign a pile of non-disclosure agreements, and so, of course, he doesn't tell us who it was that gave this career-best performance. The only hint we have is that it's not a character new to the franchise, though that still leaves a lot of ground to cover.

It could be Mark Hamill, we know that the Luke Skywalker actor will be in the movie, despite that the fact that his character died in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Beyond that, it could be any of the newer characters, from Daisy Ridley to John Boyega and beyond. Perhaps it's Billy Dee Williams' Lando Calrissian. He also will be returning to the franchise in Episode IX and has had a career long enough to be able to call something a "career-best performance." It seems unlikely Smith would use that sort of a phrase for somebody like Daisy Ridley, she has so much of her career left in front of her.

Needless to say. this sort of reaction is exactly what fans have been hoping to hear. While the reaction to Star Wars: The Last Jedi was somewhat divisive, regardless of which side you fall on, if you're a fan of Star Wars then you want the final episode of the new trilogy to be something special, and Kevin Smith certainly makes it sounds like that's exactly what we're going to get.

Smith not only praises this one performance but also J.J. Abrams work as the director of the film. He praises the director's ability to manage the massive set that he saw. Smith is used to directing TV episodes or much smaller films, so seeing Star Wars was something else, even for him.

We have almost exactly one year until Star Wars Episode IX debuts in theaters. There's a lot that needs to be done in the next 12 months, but excitement is only going to grow between now and then. The new Star Wars trilogy comes to an end December 20, 2019.
