Star Wars' John Boyega Says He's Had Talks With Marvel

It's no secret that the world is pretty Star Wars crazy right about now. Following the prequels' conclusion, there was a long hiatus void of silver screen content. And with Disney now in charge of the property, we should expect new and exciting Star Wars movies every year or so for the foreseeable future. Actor John Boyega is one of the stars of the current trilogy, and recently expanded his influence in the business by producing and starring in Pacific Rim Uprising. Some fans have also been calling for him to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, considering Episode IX will likely be his last appearance as Finn. Now it looks like he's actually had talks with the behemoth studio.

This exciting news comes to us from John Boyega's recent appearance Awesome Con in Washington, D.C.. During his Q&A with the audience, he was reportedly asked about taking on the mantle of Blade in the MCU. While that seems like a great fit for the actor, he actually revealed he'd never take the role from actor Wesley Snipes. But he has had some meetings with the MCU about potentially joining-- just not anytime soon.

John Boyega's comments (via Bounding Into Comics) are enough to make any self respecting cinephile or nerd giddy with excitement. Fans are eager to see the same faces across multiple sci-fi platforms, like how both Josh Brolin and Chris Evans have played multiple comic book characters. Getting a Star Wars lead into the MCU would be a great way for the fans to keep up with Boyega, and watch him kick more ass in the future.

Considering the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it certainly doesn't seem out of the question for John Boyega to take a role in the not too distant future. Avengers 4 will end Phase Three, and will bring the MCU as we know it to a close. Many of the cinematic universe's leading actors are coming to the end of their contracts, and it seems like just about any hero could be killed off in the next two Avengers movies. Some new characters are going to be needed to fill in the ranks, and Boyega would be a major win.

As for which character John Boyega could play, there seems to be a variety of different choices now that the shared universe is embracing both cosmic and magic stories. That being said, fans aren't likely going to let go the idea of John Boyega playing Blade. Since Doctor Strange opened up the MCU to more magical elements, it's about time that vampire hero joined the shared universe. Then again, many fans (including Boyega himself) are hoping that Wesley Snipes returns to the role if/when it's brought back to theaters.

How Much Alita: Battle Angel Has Already Made Overseas

At present, box office prognostications for Alita: Battle Angel don't look fantastic. Early estimates have suggested it won't do big business in its opening weekend, and while its Rotten Tomatoes score has been rising since the embargo first lifted, it's still getting a mostly middling response. We won't fully know how things will turn out until Sunday morning, but at the very least the film is padding its numbers with a fast start internationally.

While Alita: Battle Angel isn't out in American theaters yet, is has been given an early release over in Asia, where it has already made $32 million - according to Box Office Mojo. Fox hoped that it would get a boost in the region thanks to A) the origins of the source material, and B) the recent Chinese New Year holiday, and while the movie won't actually be out in China until later this month, it's already picked up a nice chunk of change. The movie is now out in 11 markets in Asia, and it's been particularly successful in Korea.

It's been suggested that Alita: Battle Angel might end up making less than $25 million during its five-day Valentine's Day weekend release domestically, and that would certainly be a disappointment for the feature. Not only has it been in the works for nearly 20 years, but it's been finished with principal photography since early 2017. It's been estimated that the budget is somewhere in the $150-200 million range, and a soft opening in America would be a serious blemish. Fortunately, an impressive overseas showing may prevent it from being regarded in hindsight as a flop.

It's true that $32 million might not seem like much in the grand scheme, but it's possible that Alita: Battle Angel will wind up making some seriously big numbers in foreign markets. James Cameron, who wrote and produced the film, has a huge following in China, with both Avatar ($204.1 million) and Titanic ($43.9 million) being massive successes during their theatrical releases, and there is a history of splashy action movies doing better abroad than at home. This could easily be one of those cases.

Based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series, Gunnm, and directed by Robert Rodriguez, Alita: Battle Angel is set in the year 2563 in a post-apocalyptic society - specifically a metropolis called Iron City. The story begins as a scientist named Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) discovers the body of a cyborg in a junk heap while searching for scraps for his work. Ido is successfully able to bring her back to life, naming her Alita (Rosa Salazar), and she not only begins to adjust to her new life, but slowly starts to remember who she was before her resurrection.

There are few franchises that have stood up the time quite as well as Harry Potter. In addition to J.K. Rowling's original novels and their film adaptations, the Wizarding World is still constantly being expanded through projects like Pottermore, The Cursed Child plays, and the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The cast of actors who brought the characters to life remain synonymous with their magical counterpart, especially Harry himself, Daniel Radcliffe.

In fact, Daniel Radcliffe was originally planned to reprise his role in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. The animated blockbuster has tons of cameos, but ultimately Radcliffe's appearance as Harry ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor. Director Mike Mitchell recently revealed why Harry apparated out of the movie, saying:

Oh yeah, we were definitely going to go out to Daniel. And he was game, but unfortunately his character got cut. I dont remember why it happened. I think it was because we didnt want to upset any Harry Potter fans. They have such a following, so we decided to upset the Mary Poppins fans. We just made Larry Poppins.

It looks like the generations of Harry Potter fans were a bit too daunting for Mike Mitchell when it came to crating out the story and various cameos of The Lego Movie 2. Instead, he took a dig at Mary Poppins, the practically perfect nanny who only recently returned to theaters.

Mike Mitchell's comments to Huffington Post may be surprising, considering just how many iconic characters have already popped up in the Lego Movie franchise. Aim has already been taken at superheroes like the Justice League, as well as characters from the Star Wars franchise. But it seems that Potterheads are the one demographic that Mitchell wasn't willing to make angry.

The planned Harry Potter joke for The Lego Movie 2 would reportedly poke fun at the movie's inability to get the rights to the beloved wizard. Instead, Harry's cousin Larry Potter was going to pop up, with Daniel Radcliffe voicing the lesser known character. It's a quick gag, and one that it appears Mike Mitchell transferred over to Mary Poppins instead.

And with Mary Poppins Returns recently bringing audiences back to Cherry Tree Lane for the first time in decades, the timing might have been better to make fun of the musical nanny instead. Unfortunately, that also means that Daniel Radcliffe didn't get to record his quick bit as Harry Potter, and reprise his role for the first time since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

It should be exciting to see how many characters pop up in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Actors like Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa are reprising their roles from the DC, so we should expect plenty of cameos.
